The State of OpenFF
So back in August, FriendFeed announced that they were being acquired by Facebook. Naturally, everyone expressed fears that FriendFeed would be consumed by Facebook and we would be left without the service that many of us have come to call our digital homes. That gave birth to the idea of creating a clone of FriendFeed, based on the APIs that FriendFeed has published. That idea became known...

Got Gitorious Working In Ubuntu 9.10 Server
I managed to get Gitorious installed, configured and working on a Ubuntu 9.10 Server virtual machine. The installation isn’t very difficult overall, but it did require some adjustments from the steps that Gitorious’s Ubuntu HOWTO provides. Here’s a screenshot to show the running Gitorious install on my local network: I’m going to work on making a virtual appliance for...

Droid is no iPhone Killer, But I Still Love It
So I’ve had the Motorola Droid for a few days. As I’m becoming familiar with my new phone, I’m also learning the ins and outs of Android. That familiarity has brought me to the realization that the Motorola Droid— although a great device— is not an “iPhone Killer”. So why won’t the Motorola Droid supplant the iPhone as the #1 smartphone? Would you...

smart Car Road Trip to South Carolina!
Well, I leave on my smart car road trip to South Carolina on Friday. I’m stocked up on audiobooks (Sci-Fi and Urban Fantasy, mainly). I bought a ScanGauge II to track my mileage. I’ve booked my hotel and have my route planned. My GPS is updated and stuck to my windshield (TomTom One 130). All that’s left is to pack my clothes. I CAN’T WAIT! :-)

Hulu and Ubuntu Linux
Flash works great in Ubuntu. However, there are two different “non-free” flash plugins to choose from. I was a bit confused by this little oddity. Both packages claimed to have the same version of flash (10.0.22.87). So I installed the package called “flashplugin-nonfree”. That seemed to work great on all the sites I visited— except Hulu. I had no clue why. All other...

Review: Maxtor Central Axis 1TB Network Storage...
I bought a Maxtor Central Axis NAS for a client yesterday. The install was so simple and the device was so easy to access that I decided to buy one for myself. Here are my impressions of this little NAS. Technical Specifications: 1 x 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet Port 1 x 1TB 7200RPM SATA II Hard Drive with 32MB Cache 1 x USB 2.0/1.1 port for external hard drives or printers UPnP AV 1.0...

Hurricane Ike and Self-employment
I love being my own boss. I often say that I will never work for someone else again. However, Hurricane Ike has forced me to be realistic about my prospects as an independent business person. My client base is in Southeast Texas. Looking at the pictures of the devastation of the area (see here), I think it will be many weeks before power is even restored. Two-thirds of the power infrastructure in...

Thomas Jefferson HS Alumni Website
Wow, this has been a fun couple of days. My sister called me yesterday to let me know that there was a new TJ Alumni page on the Ning social network. I checked it out and ended up spending the next 6 hours replying to discussions, looking for old friends, etc. It’s really a lot of fun.

I L-O-V-E Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. This is the full three-act musical comedy hosted on Hulu.com. Neil Patrick Harris is perfect as the lovably inept villian Dr. Horrible. The supporting cast playing Captain Hammer and Penny are also extremely well cast. If you haven’t seen this yet, take a 45 minute break and watch the video.

"Creative Capitalism"-- The Great Web 2.0 Delusion
I’ve been thinking about this for a long time and only recently found a comment that made me really want to expound on my opinion of Web 2.0 as a business concept. This comment was made on FriendFeed in response to a post by Veronica Belmont pointing out McCain’s comment about “hating bloggers”: “A great divide in contemporary American culture: crony capitalists vs....

Stargate Continuum Review
Only minor spoilers here, so you’ll probably be okay reading through it. Stargate Continuum is a new Stargate-universe movie revolving around time travel set to be released to video on July 29th. Here’s a one-liner description of the movie from IMDB: “Ba’al travels back in time and prevents the Stargate program from being started. SG-1 must somehow restore...

Ping.fm: What's Good And What Doesn't Really...
I started using Ping.fm to update my various social network statuses, micro-blog entries and blogs. After spending a couple of days with it and getting used to the various features, I have to say I really love it. What’s Good? Practically everything. Ping.fm allows you to classify your social networks into three basic update categories: Blogs, Micro-blogs and Status Updates. So for...

Review: Fringe (Pilot, FOX)
I had the opportunity to view the pilot episode of the new FOX series called Fringe. It’s guaranteed to be compared against shows like the X-Files (for the content) and Lost (because it’s by JJ Abrams). **SPOILER ALERT** Based on the pilot, this is going to be an excellent series. The characters are truly engaging. There’s the beautiful, intelligent agent with a past. There are...

Memorial Lunch Today
It’s going to be a rough day today, I think. A good friend of mine— Bobby Oliver— passed away at the beginning of last week. He was only in his mid- to late-30’s. The family had a funeral in Houston last Saturday, but I wasn’t able to attend because they moved the date a couple of times. Anyway, Christus Hospital in Beaumont is having a memorial lunch for Bobby today...

First Week Of Self-Employment
Well, my first week of (re-)self-employment is almost over and it’s already been a great week. I’ve done a few small projects and have a full week of work lined up for next week. I’m also getting back into programming now, with a cool project to create a social community around the products that one of my client’s sells. It’s not a retail/consumer oriented site....

I love Ask A Ninja. It’s one of my favorite podcasts of all time. But AaN just topped itself with a great parody of “I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General”, which lists all the different types of ninjas. Hi-frickin’-larious!

Going Back Into Business For Myself
So after a little uncertainty this week because my boss wanted to negotiate for me to stay on full-time, I’m proud to announce that I’m going back into business for myself again. My company is called Technical Care. I do networking (I’m a CCNP), desktop and server support, programming, enterprise reporting (mainly with Crystal Reports), etc. I’m looking forward to being my...

Mahalo Daily →
Mahalo Daily is having a competition right now for a new host to replace Veronica Belmont (impossible, you say?). My personal favorite is Leah D’Emilio, who is professional, geeky, cute and interesting. They’re in the final stages of choosing the host. I can’t wait to see who they choose!
